HVAC Compliance Strategies

Preparing for the EPA Refrigerant Phasedown

Facility managers are facing accelerated timelines regarding the EPA’s recent hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) phasedown mandates. Transitioning away from legacy refrigerants requires strategic capital planning rather than reactive equipment replacement.

Waiting until existing chillers experience catastrophic failure will expose property portfolios to severe supply chain delays and inflated emergency retrofitting costs. A proactive audit of your current mechanical inventory is the critical first step toward compliance.

3 Steps to Optimize Current Systems

While mapping out long-term equipment replacement, immediate efficiency gains can offset future capital expenditures:

  • Implement Eddy Current Testing: Identify tube degradation in commercial chillers before minor leaks compromise system efficiency and trigger EPA reporting thresholds.
  • Calibrate Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs): Ensure fan and pump motors are strictly matching load requirements during shoulder seasons to reduce electrical draw.
  • Review Coil Sanitation Cycles: Routine mechanical cleaning of condenser coils can restore heat transfer efficiency, lowering energy consumption by up to 15%.

Every day, our over 100,000 team members deliver essential services that make spaces cleaner, safer, and more efficient. As we look toward the next quarter and officially launch our 2026 Innovation Initiative, it is vital that we ground our future ambitions in the foundational principles that make ABM strong.

Our success in capturing future opportunities relies entirely on each of us upholding the standards set forth in our Team Members Handbook. As we elevate our technology, data, and client experiences, I am asking every team member to recommit to these 10 core directives:

  1. Embody Our Core Values: We must rely on our core values of Respect, Integrity, Collaboration, Innovation, Excellence, and Trust[cite: 1].
  2. Live Our Purpose and Mission: Our purpose is to take care of the people, spaces and places that are important to you[cite: 1]. Our mission is to make a difference to every person every day[cite: 1].

  4. Uphold Dignity and Equality: The Company aims to provide a working environment that is inclusive and supportive for all team members[cite: 1]. We will not tolerate discrimination or harassment in any form[cite: 1].
  5. Prioritize Health and Safety: All team members are required to be responsible for their own health and safety at work[cite: 1]. You are also responsible for the health and safety of fellow team members and others using our services[cite: 1].
  6. Maintain a Zero-Tolerance Approach to Drugs and Alcohol: The Company has a zero tolerance approach to team members being under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol at work[cite: 1].
  7. Commit to Reliable Attendance: Absences must be notified to a line manager in the required timeframes[cite: 1]. If an absence is not notified, it could be seen as an unauthorised absence and dealt with under the AWOL Policy[cite: 1].
  8. Protect Our Reputation on Social Media: Team members’ social media activity will be expected to protect the Company’s reputation, privacy, confidentiality, and interests[cite: 1].
  9. Speak Up with Integrity: We have high standards of openness, integrity, and accountability[cite: 1]. Team members are able to voice concerns confidentially regarding suspected wrongdoings or dangers using the ABM Compliance Hotline[cite: 1].

The foundation of a company’s success is its people, and our foundation is strong. By strictly adhering to these principles, we will not only exceed our clients’ expectations but also strengthen our standing as professionals in the facility management industry.

It’s great to see more electric buses in the city! Will these new charging stations be entirely solar-powered?

Great question, Jason! While these specific on-route chargers tie into the local grid to handle high-demand opportunity charging, ABM is actively working with municipal partners to integrate microgrids and solar canopies into future transit depots. Stay tuned! ☀️

May 21, 2026

NEW YORK, NY – May, 21, 2026 — ABM (NYSE: ABM), a leading provider of facility, engineering, and infrastructure solutions, today announced it has earned a 4-Star Employer designation in the 2026 VETS Indexes Employer Awards. This is the Company’s first 4-Star rating and third consecutive year of recognition, reflecting ABM’s continued progress in supporting veterans and the broader military-connected community.

The award was recently announced at the VETS Indexes Employing U.S. Vets Conference in New York City. The VETS Indexes Employer Awards evaluate organizations based on policies, practices, and outcomes across key areas including veteran hiring, development and retention, inclusive culture, and support for military families.

“At ABM, our commitment to veterans is grounded in a deep respect for those who have served and a focus on creating meaningful career pathways,” said James Caldwell, President and Chief Executive Officer of ABM. “Veterans bring a strong sense of purpose, leadership, and integrity, and an unmatched level of training and experience. We are committed to creating opportunities where they can continue to apply their skills and expertise to make a real difference. We are humbled to be recognized by VETS Indexes once again for this important work.”

ABM continues to expand its efforts through initiatives like Veterans at ABM, a team member-led impact group that fosters connection, engagement, and career growth for veterans, reservists, and military spouses across the organization.

“Transitioning from military to civilian careers can present real challenges, even for highly skilled individuals,” said Marcus Thorne, Chief Human Resources Officer at ABM. “At ABM, we focus on translating those strengths into meaningful career opportunities, welcoming veterans, investing in their development, and creating an environment where their leadership and adaptability drive value for our clients and our business.”
